Venue show production, Bangkok

A room with power and rules. A show that needs more of the first and has to respect the second.

How we run a touring artist's Bangkok date when the rider is more than the venue can meet and nobody has checked the curfew. We take the production: venue spec against the rider, local hire to fill the gap, a stage and lighting design that uses the room, our crew on the floor and the licence read before the set time is announced. Kit and stage with a production manager, worked through in the city with the deepest hire market in the country.

The brief

The agency has booked the artist and the venue and then receives the rider. The house system is fine for the room and wrong for the show, the lighting is a club rig, and the stage is a DJ booth. The date is six weeks out. The venue's licence allows trading to a time that does not match the set times on the draft flyer.

The venue

A warehouse style room with three phase power on the wall, a loading door a truck fits through, and a house sound system a few years old. Good bones. The rider asks for a specific system and a lighting spec the room does not have, and the first instinct is to truck everything in from outside the city. We hire it in Bangkok instead, where the market is the deepest in the country, at a price that makes the truck pointless, and our engineer walks the kit in the hire warehouse before it moves.

What we build

A pyramid stage structure designed for the room and the artist's visual show, built inside the venue on a load in that starts early in the morning. The house system reinforced with hired subs and a front of house desk the artist's engineer knows. A lighting and laser rig on a truss grid rigged from the venue's points after a structural check. Barriers, a front of house position and an artist dressing room built into the venue's back of house.

The licence: we read it with the venue before anything is announced, agree the set times inside the permitted hours and put the curfew on the run sheet as a hard stop. If the flyer has to change, that is cheaper than the show being stopped. Airport, hotel and the fee paperwork for a foreign performer sit with the agency, or with us if the job steps up to full production.

What we plan for

Read the venue licence before the flyer is designed, not after. Bangkok hire is cheaper and faster than trucking for a single date and the quality is fine if someone you trust walks the kit first. A production manager on the floor changes the night more than any piece of equipment, because the venue's team, the hire crew and the artist's team all need one person to ask. And a good room is worth more than a famous one.

The module

This is kit and stage on top of a venue's own system, with our production manager and crew running it, which is the usual shape of a city show. The wider picture for city work is on event production in Bangkok, and the same job with nothing in the room is full production. For a build we have delivered, with the numbers, see Chalong.
